Four years ago the Republican campaign to prevent John Kerry’s election used mockery very effectively. No matter what Kerry tried to do it seemed that Rove’s cool kids managed to use their high-school jeering skills to make him seem like the not really smart, sensible guy he actually was. That was a definite concern going into this campaign, but so far at least the cat-calls aren’t working.
Maybe it’s because the Republicans have such a train wreck of a candidate that they’re spending all their time making him seem serious, or perhaps with more and more of the electorate getting its news from The Daily Show instead of a Murdoch enterprise the Republicans need better writing to compete. I personally think that the things voters are concerned about this year aren’t so easily belittled. Or it might just have something to do with Obama himself.
In the coming days it's going to be interesting to watch this debate between John McCain and John McCain.
I was never that impressed with Obama the orator. What he said was good – very good – yet it always seemed a little at arm’s length. But I’m liking this Obama the stand-up comedian. More of that, please!
