Taking on religion, and the superstition and obscurantism which characterize it, is not the job of somebody running for public office in America. Somebody else had better start fighting back, however, before a new species of the Dark Ages is upon us, and faith-based mobs begin breaking into scientific laboratories and smashing the test tubes.
Nicholas von Hoffman, Now Is Not the Time For National Unity!
While it might be the prescription of those in positions of power, unity and prayer are contraindicated. Attempts at unity, especially from the disenfranchised left, would give our consent to this regime, stamping it with the approval of those who were trampled in the calls for supporting the "troops" and their "commander," even during an election year. If there was ever a time for partisanship, this is it. With the country divided and the stakes higher than they have ever been, no one dare blink.
And when did partisanship become political cover? Tom DeLay is now being granted asylum in the congress, and the only defense he offers against the charges against him is that they are "partisan attacks." Well, sure. I mean are the members of his own party going to call him on his illegal actions? He got them 5 more seats in the house so they give him a "get out of jail free" card. Once again the party of morals and responsibility -- who enacted the ethics rules in the first place to oust an arguably corrupt Democrat -- immediately defend the indefensible as soon as those same rules threaten one of their own. Never has there been a more dazzling display of hypocrisy.
There is a crying need to find a wedge to use against those who would smash test tubes in their evangelical trance. But how can anyone hope to approach that entrenched citadel of serpentine sophistry when brazen acts of hubris and simple dishonesty are committed out in the open without fear of reprisal. Will no one stand up for common sense and decency? Hello?
